Coaching Philosophy

Here's the thing about coaching philosophy...it's ever-evolving! How I coached 20 years ago, even 2 years ago is different from how I coach now. I learn and grow with each season because each group is unique. But here are some things to know...

Playing Time:

I do my best to be fair and competitive which is a tight line to walk. I try my best to be a light while teaching my players to be competitive. Let me tell you - it's not easy. I give girls opportunities but when it comes down to an important match or point I will do my best to have the group I trust the most on the court. Trust is earned through practice, training and competition.

Something I value in games is when players are prepared throughout the rally and not caught off guard. They are problem solvers and all with a positive attitude.

There is NO EQUAL playing time with me. I am usually coaching competitive teams, and the term "equal" playing time can be confusing anyway. If it's a non-competitive team (ie. YMCA, REC league) I will do my best to get everyone in but playing "minutes" or "touches" may not be equal. It's just the way of the game.

I can be tough. I can be fun. Just remember I am competitive and I am doing what I think is best for the team in order to put our best foot forward.

Expectations:

You can only control what you can control. Within that is good work ethic, attitude, and communication.

Theme:

Being servants to your team…doing your best to make every touch your best so the next person can do their best do that eagerly and with grace.

Team Spirit is the eagerness to lose oneself in the group for the good of the group. When we're eager to help others we're able to perform with enthusiasm, allowing us to reach peak performance.  - John Wooden

Training:

Something I focus on is ball control - in all touches. Whether that's serving, passing, setting, digging or hitting. Hitting the ball where the other team is not, keeping the ball from hitting the ground with the best touch possible, is something my teams work on a lot. I use all the tools from coaching and playing at the highest level to train all these things.

Important words/phrases to me as a coach:

Teamwork, team player, positive energy, good work ethic,  coachable, adaptable, honest, problem solver, aware, eager to learn and help teammates, calm, prepared, make things look easy/act like you’ve been there...

Of course there is more and I will continue to add...
